Walk With Angels

I don't remember how we got connected with United Angels. Somewhere in what I now refer to as the "the blur"- the time period between when Cooper was born and we found he had markers for Down syndrome and the time when I finally got my footing again- I found the organization and immediately clung to it, like I did with all things that had potential for helping me in my journey as a mother in the special abilities community.

United Angels (found here https://unitedangels.org/) is a local organization in Utah with a mission to "support parents and families of individuals with special needs." Becoming a member is free, and through mainly donations, they provide support, activities, and community to families who have a loved one with special needs. In our first year with United Angels, we participated in group art classes, infant learning classes, a special showing of Frozen with the Utah symphony playing live music, and most important for us, we met many other families who have children with Down syndrome. Community in whatever circumstance you find yourself is so important. For that reason, what United Angels has provided us is priceless.

The main event each year that provides the most funding for United Angels programs is their annual Walk With Angels event. They put up a big stage with big speakers for performances, they have booths with face painting, balloon animals, games, treats, and photo booths. Other local organizations set up shop to educate and reach more people they can help. Food trucks line the block. Characters and mascots walk around, bringing smiles to everyone around.

And then there's the walk. The Walk With Angels.

Characters, mascots, volunteers, local cheerleaders line the sidewalk and each person with special needs, each "Angel," is celebrated and cheered for as they come through the balloon arch. It is magic.

We first attended in 2023 when Cooper was about 7months old. He slept most of that event.

This year Cooper was 18 months old. He stayed awake the whole time and had the best a lot fun! We had family and friends join our walking team and Cooper was awarded the "Youngest Angel" award. We're so grateful for the support of our family and friends, and for the people running United Angels and creating opportunities for Cooper and for our family. Can't wait for next year!

If you're in Utah, definitely check out this organization! https://unitedangels.org/
